trappedsilencehope? The main idea behind this series is to bring out the emotion of frustration. This frustration is evoked through the suppression of musical expression, or rather that our expression is often drowned out by ‘louder’ voices of the international music scene. This sense of frustration is silent and intense.

This series of photos, I am hoping will be the finalised and the three pics shall be picked from here. Really went throught a lot of effort, hair pulling and risk of spoiling the lovely and expensive violin. I guess the price of this violin has dropped dramatically.  haha the sacrifice we have to made for Art … hmmm
I am still sticking to my theme. Will update the title and short description soon…. My brain is filled with so much abstract and fine art ideas that I really dunnoe how to name it. Anyway for the advantage of those who read this blog, we should all judge the photo from here, cos when I print out using normal paper and home printer, the colors dun stand out and not polished enough.

Yupp.. cya guys tmr!

This photo expresses two views :

windows-of-opportunity.jpg

                   Windows of opportunity

In Singapore, a good academic qualification will help to open many windows of opportunity for you. eg.more job offers. However, if you don’t possess this academic qualification, the window of opportunity will be closed. On the other hand, don’t fret even if you don’t possess a good academic qualification. Even though one window of opportunity is closed, there are many other windows opened, waiting for you to explore.

                                              Just another paper

Singapore depends so much on academic qualification. But isn’t it just another piece of paper amongst the stacks of paper?  Why are people placing so much emphasis on it?  Does academic qualification matters more than experience?

filter.jpg

                       Stuck

Singapore depends so much on academic qualification. The society is like a big net, a big filter. If you possess that academic qualification,  you will be sieved out from pool of people and stay on the filter(like the scraps stuck in the filter). But if you don’t posses this qualification, you will just be washed down.

Hi guys, here’s some of my ideas. My concept would be dependence on 4D (gambling). It is quite common amongst the older generation and middle aged, even young people. I thought of a few emotions for it. Firstly, it would be on dependence on it for a peace of mind, thus I have the picture of someone praying with the 4d ticket.

prayingwordpress.jpg

The second idea would be a dependence which causes distress. The picture of the tickets all over the steps with a downward angle was to extress distress.

4dwordpress.jpg

The third idea would be how precious the four digits are when people engage in the activity. However, the 4 digits only obtains some value when the person wins. Other than that, it is simply 4 digits which could be found even in places like the rubbish dump. It is to portray how worthless the 4 digits are when the person doesn’t win.

These are some of my ideas. I would try to improve the images. For the praying photo I was thinking it might speak more if it were the hands of an older person? Like how the old person spend many years buying 4d. Even though the chances of winning are slim, it is already incorporated in her life. I would say it is some what like buying a “hope”. Do give me some of your views? :)

Title:Panadolismyfriend.

Studying in Singapore has been a significant phase. We spend nearly a quarter of our life studying, with increasing stress and workload. Eventually, some of us look for stress-relief fix like Panadol to hang on and move on. The background shows a guy in a state of destress while the foreground shouts out the Panadol Extra. Hope this evokes some feelings. Personally, i feel it could be better. Pls tell me if the central theme is alright or not, and i will then proceed to think of more variations. =) thanks!

Title: Catch Water? Save it.

Despite our attempt to ‘create’ our very own supply of water, we are still largely reliant on imported water. The resources are limited, our preference for the taste of water is more or less used to the imported water[as noted in a survey, most people find the taste of our very own water, Newater, a little peculiar sweet]. Hence i try to portray a sense of helpless and mockery that we cant ‘catch’ [ as in catch in our reservoirs] our own water. The save it part is portrayed in another variation, with the bottle, where it shows water flowing down, but few drops, very few drops could enter the bottle itself. Thus, it portrays a slow and tedious process and likely impossible to fill it up soon.

Title: Lockedcomfort

In this picture, im trying to portray how comfortable life is in Singapore. We have a clean environment, law by law society, politically and economically stable. But all this are dependent on its citizens to make it happen and stay so, as we work hand in hand to bring out the best and unify our country. Hence the idea of being locked[like hands locked] by the ideals of Singapore we have to maintain,  but it still feels comfortable.  The background is a home which is not very obvious, but it is to give a calm and comfortable setting. Singapore, my home.

*for more variations of pictures, pls go to http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/ff32/in-dependence/ and kindly leave some comments, so i may improve on these or move on to my other ideas, which ive not been able to take it..=)

thanks lots guys!

Adapt – takes any shape and form

u all can tell the fake potato from the bunch rite? it’s suppose to represent singapore constantly changing itself; mirror, copy other countries.. to blend in, be recognised etc.. to see it positively is very flexible and adaptable.. negative connotation may be that it’s ultimately shapeless – souless, empty, lacks content, does not differentiate from others etc..

Cookie Cutter

i think singaporeans are generally a very ‘safe’ bunch of ppl who follow the ‘norms’, listen to the government (watever they deem as right to do) etc.. hence resulting in a cookie cutter society? like everyone is kinda alike taking the same safe route study: primary sch > secondary sch > junior college > university > graduate > work work work… bcos it’s deem as the right thing to do.. we may giveup our interest or passion in certain areas like the arts etc cos we’ve been told that artist cant earn enuff to feed themself kinda stuff..

Chess pieces

Merlion chess 01

Merlion chess 02

this arent the final pieces.. i intend to use this Merlion chocolates as chess pieces but i need to find the chess board first.. erm i’m still thinking of how to explain it haha.. to be updated..

pls comment, give mi feedback and ideas haha u know i’m not very good with words so perhaps u guys can help mi think of better titles :)   :)

I took a more literal take on the “fine arts” element of the pjt. Like how many aspects of life in Singapore are dependent on other countries/factors etc etc. Art or rather the standard of art is usually judged using other people’s yardstick. Artists are playing “catching up” most of the time.

The series is inspired through the conversations I’ve had with my JC class mate, Grace. Grace is the 2001/2002 National Arts Council Scholar. The images captured attempts to depict her emotions during the pursuit of her craft- ballet. Inspirations for the images were from the various stories she told me throughout our 7 yrs of friendship.

Trepidation

4th position on pointe

Wanted to show the notion of taking a step out. Grace took an academic path different from majority of us. The idea was to show her taking a step out into the world of full time ballet despite the uncertainties of it all. Hence Trepidation.

Balance

5th position on pointe

Balance is about how when an artist is proficient in her craft, she is in a comfortable and stable stage. Some artists are happy to remain at the safe, reassuring stage, good artists on the other hand are always trying to move beyond and above. Hence…

Ascension

Ascension, to move to a higher level. Being in-dependent does not mean you have to remain so for the rest of your life. Grace firmly believes so and constantly explores the boundaries of ballet, bringing and incorporating it into theatre, photography and other forms of art.

Pain

For the lack of a better title, the focus here is on the growths and callouses on her toes. Signs of the sacrifices that has to be made for one’s craft.

Hope these images work, have loads more but no time to photoshop them all. Feel free to comment yah?

Discipline

Inspiration drawn from the following quote: “All parents damage their children. It cannot be helped. Youth, like pristine glass, absorbs the prints of its handlers. Some parents smudge, others crack, a few shatter childhoods completely into jagged little pieces, beyond repair.” — Mitch Albom, The Five People You Meet in Heaven

In our society, many parents still subscribe to the notion of “spare the rod and spoil the child”, often forgetting that being too dependent on rod damages instead of spoiling the child.

For a Better Tomorrow

We’re always chained and weighted down by routine — a mechanical cycle of work, rewards, lessons learnt, incentives, upgrading ourselves, occasional play — as we strive to keep up with the race. Like puppets to strings, we are dependent on the rules laid down for us in order to move ahead, as we struggle to climb up the ladder of “success”.

Hey everyone who’s looking:)!

I decided to change my initial idea of suppression of Art and its dependence on western ideas to something else.

These two pictures are about one’s dependence on anything artificial.

This will probably be my caption:

Don’t lie.
In our mirror image we see ourselves, the image that speaks to the world, and allows it to throw its judgments back to us.

In this mirror we see what we’re dependent on, and what lies beneath this image we so carefully crafted. These acne gels, those pills we pop to keep sane.

In this mirror we reflect our lie.

and in this mirror we see what lies behind us, the greater picture that makes us whole. Is this country we see the image in the mirror, or can we feel beneath its artificiality?

.

ivy_10nov_artificial dependence

I tried to do something in Black and white. It seems contrived though. will keep trying. :)

Ivy
